Avoidable Patient Errors: Nov. 18 International Symposium

<p><span class="xn-location">DETROIT</span>, <span class="xn-chron">Nov. 11, 2010</span> /CNW/ -- Preventable hospital errors kill up to 98,000 hospital patients a year in the U.S., and another 24,000 in <span class="xn-location">Canada</span>.</p>

-- From 2006-08, there were 958,202 patient safety events, including
99,180 in-hospital deaths among Medicare patients in the U.S.
-- 20 percent of hospital patients experience adverse events, and 15
million patients are injured annually.
-- 2 million hospital-acquired infections each year in the U.S.
-- The cost of medical error to the U.S. economy each year is estimated
to
be at least $17 billion.
-- Under-reporting of adverse events in health care is estimated to range
from 50-90 percent.

<p>On <span class="xn-chron">Thursday, Nov. 18</span>, Detroit's <span class="xn-person">Henry Ford</span> Hospital and Windsor's Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital will co-host the International Patient Safety Symposium - featuring experts both hospitals - from <span class="xn-chron">8 a.m.</span> to <span class="xn-chron">4 p.m.</span>, in Caesars Windsor, 377 Riverside Drive East, Windsor.</p>
