As Ontario students head back to class, Fidelity and TVO help connect educators and families with financial literacy resources
FrançaisFidelity's Money Gains® videos aim to boost confidence, support teachers preparing for Ontario's new financial literacy graduation requirement
TORONTO, Sept. 1, 2026 /CNW/ -- Recent research conducted by Fidelity Investments Canada ULC ("Fidelity") finds that while 78% of teens surveyed (aged 15 to 17) say they have heard about investing, less than half (45%) understand how it works.1 When Fidelity asked a group of university students about their high school education, only 5% said they were very well prepared to manage money in the real world.2
Fidelity applauds the Ontario government for addressing this learning gap by implementing stronger financial curriculum content and a graduation requirement, which takes effect this fall. Through the Grade 10 Career Studies course, students will complete learning modules and test questions based on financial literacy concepts from the Grade 1 to 9 curriculum.
- To support students, educators and parents who are preparing for the test, Fidelity is providing resources through TVO Media Education Group (TVO).
- TVO, which develops high-quality, award-winning programming and educational resources for learners across the province, developed course material, teacher resources and the assessment for the Grade 10 Financial Literacy Graduation Requirement.
- TVOLearn provides educators with access to a range of financial literacy resources, including links to Fidelity's free bilingual Money Gains video series and lesson plans.
"One of Fidelity's greatest priorities is strengthening financial literacy for all Canadians, and especially for our young people," said Linda Passarelli, Vice-President, Talent Management, Fidelity. "We're incredibly honoured to work with a renowned education leader like TVO, trusted by Ontario parents and educators for decades, through our Money Gains series. Our goal is to support students in learning the basics of investing, debt management, budgeting and more, so they can develop healthy financial habits early on and feel confident about achieving their financial and life goals."
Support for teachers with classroom-ready resources
Fidelity's Money Gains® video series, a free investment literacy video library that supports students, teachers and parents in learning the basics of investing, now totals 32 videos, available in both English and French. The latest chapter focuses on personal finance topics, including:
- Credit Fundamentals
- Debt Management
- Budgeting
- Education/Financial Aid
- Understanding Income Tax
To help bring financial literacy straight to the classroom, Fidelity worked with an Ontario-certified teacher to publish free lesson plans and summative evaluations for Chapters 1-3 in English and French.
- The resources, designed for the Ontario curriculum, can be used with Building the Entrepreneurial Mindset (BEM1O), Launching and Leading a Business (BEP2O), Grade 9 Mathematics (MTH1W) and Career Studies (GLC2O), and are available in English and French.
- Accompanying lesson plans and glossaries for Chapter 4 will follow later this year.
Money Gains is gaining momentum and resonating with Canadians, reaching nearly 800,000 views on YouTube.
How is Fidelity collaborating to support financial literacy?
To learn more about what can be done earlier to better prepare students, Fidelity asked a focus group of Ontario university students to reflect on their high school education.
- Only 5% said they were very well prepared to manage money in the real world
- 96% believe that financial literacy should have been required as part of their high school curriculum.
- Fidelity research shows young people are highly interested in investing (60%), but Fidelity's focus group results show they are not given enough learning opportunities in high school.2
Fidelity strongly supports Ontario and Saskatchewan's increased focus on financial literacy, including the graduation requirement, and encourages all provincial and territorial education ministers to introduce a similar requirement and strengthen their mandatory curriculum content on key financial topics.
"We're proud to share our resources in support of Ontario and Saskatchewan's efforts to make financial literacy a graduation requirement," added Passarelli. "Financial literacy is an essential life skill, and many students report that they are graduating high school underprepared for making financial decisions. Given this reality, it is more important than ever to strengthen financial literacy resources and curriculum across Canada."
Fidelity works with a number of stakeholders to advance financial literacy for youth and all Canadians. In addition to TVO, these include: Ontario DECA, Pathways to Education Canada, the Toronto Public Library Foundation, the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, Prosper Canada, Park Street Education and more.
