Full-service engineering consulting firm will monitor compliance with goals and objectives set forth by Infrastructure Canada during design, construction and operations phases of complex PPP highway and bridge project

MONTREAL, March 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Arup, a multidisciplinary engineering and consulting firm with a reputation for delivering innovative and sustainable designs, announced today it has been selected to provide engineering consulting services and technical advice to Infrastructure Canada for the construction of the New Bridge for the St. Lawrence corridor project. Due to an accelerated schedule, the project will break ground this summer. The New Bridge for the St. Lawrence is expected to open in December of 2018 and the rest of the corridor is expected to be in service by the end of 2020. Arup's mandate will cover a period of approximately seven years, with three one-year option periods, for a total contract value of $20.4 million.

To date, Arup has been charged with overseeing the government of Canada's interests and making sure its project goals and objectives are met, specifically the delivery of a new bridge by December 2018. Arup has worked hard to ensure that the design and construction of the project will be sustainable and of a high-quality and that the new bridge for the St. Lawrence is a fitting gateway to the city of Montreal.

"The selection of engineering experts to support our team demonstrates our commitment to delivering a safe, reliable, long-lasting bridge, constructed in a timely, cost-effective and environmentally responsible manner," said the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec in a news release issued on February 23, 2015. "The new bridge for the St. Lawrence corridor project is progressing well and is on target to meet all planned deadlines. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2015."

This complex infrastructure project will provide users with a stunning bridge designed to last 125 years. Together with Infrastructure Canada, the Arup team has sought to enhance the facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users, thus helping the Montreal region to realize their aspirations to improve connectivity. The work to date also ensures that a light rail connection to the South Shore can be realized, should this option be selected.

"We are committed to the future of Quebec and to building upon our ability to bring stakeholders together around infrastructure projects in the heart of Montreal," said Martin Landry, associate principal and Montreal office leader. "This is a transformational project and a perfect fit for Arup's skillset and diverse engineering talents. After having defined the bridge's form and structure during the procurement phase, we are delighted to see it through to completion."
