Are you an early-career journalist looking to explore your beat in greater depth? Apply for the Greg Clark Award

TORONTO, Feb. 19, 2015 /CNW/ - Early-career journalists looking to spend a week exploring their beat in greater depth are encouraged to apply for The Canadian Journalism Foundation's Greg Clark Award.  The deadline for applications is Feb. 27, 2015, 5:00 pm EST.

The successful applicant will receive $5,000 toward travel expenses, accommodation costs and related incidentals, with any unused funds to be converted into a stipend.

"The Greg Clark Award gave me a rare gift -- the chance do what I love without constraints," says Katie May, digital copy editor for the Winnipeg Free Press who won the award last year. "I was able to bring forth stories of life in Canada's North without worrying about travel expenses, newsroom budgets or even daily deadlines. The experience has instilled in me a renewed drive to push the limits of conventional journalism."

May visited a Rankin Inlet birthing centre to highlight issues around maternal health-care delivery. Read the report of May's experience and her resulting article, Birth in a Northern Nation, in the Winnipeg Free Press.

The Greg Clark Award is unique in Canadian journalism, designed to offer working journalists a chance to gain insight and meet key decision-makers on their beats. The successful applicant will get an opportunity to spend up to a week observing the inner workings of an organization not usually accessible to journalists.

All arrangements for the award assignment will be made in consultation with the award winner.

The award was created in memory of Greg Clark, one of Canada's greatest journalists—a war correspondent, avid outdoorsman, a humorist, but above all, a great reporter who excelled at storytelling.

If you know early-career journalists who could benefit from this opportunity, please encourage them to apply.

The winner will be honoured at the CJF Awards at The Fairmont Royal York in Toronto on June 3, 2015. This award is generously supported by Toronto Star and Shaw Communications.
