Alberta man drives cross-country on Journey to End Hunger tour

Donates $150,000 to fight child hunger

WINNIPEG, June 1, 2017 /CNW/ - As part of Canada 150, 60-year-old Geoff Gyles plans to travel across the country on a Journey to End Hunger tour. The goal is to raise awareness of the problem of hunger in Canada, and make a real difference by donating $150,000 towards fighting child hunger.

The Journey is also a personal one, the fulfilment of a lifelong desire to drive across the country and see it all at once. As a 10-year-old child in 1967, he watched Canada's Centennial celebrations on television, and dreamed about travelling to all the places. "It seems like the perfect time and way to celebrate Canada 150," Gyles says.

Geoff Gyles grew up in Winnipeg, MB, and now lives in Canmore, AB. His agriculture career at Wolf Trax and Enterra have made him a passionate expert on food waste. A grandfather of four, he believes hunger should never limit a child's potential.

"In a country with as many resources as Canada, we have the means to eradicate child hunger," said Geoff Gyles. "I want to do something tangible – something real – to address this problem, and encourage others to do the same. That's why I'm going on this journey."

From June 2 to July 10, Gyles will travel to the capitals of every province and territory in Canada.

Gyles will donate $10,000 in each city, plus another $10,000 to a national organization, Breakfast for Learning, for a total of $150,000.
