EDMONTON, Jan. 21 /CNW/ - The Alberta College of Pharmacists (ACP) commends the Minister's Advisory Committee on Health for the vision for health care in Alberta outlined in their report, A Foundation for Alberta's Health System.
"The Committee has rightly centered the focus of health care where it must be: on individuals and their families," says ACP Registrar Greg Eberhart. "If successfully implemented, the recommendations will result in an excellent system that meets Albertans' evolving health needs.
"We also applaud the Committee for recognizing the importance of a condensed and coordinated legislative framework that clarifies expectations and responsibilities. The proposed Alberta Health Act will uphold critical values, remove barriers to access and service delivery, and optimize care. Such a foundation is a critical starting point for a more efficient and appropriate use of resources and professionals' skills.
"Achieving the Committee's vision will require considerable effort and teamwork, but we are up to the task," states Eberhart. "Pharmacist practice is increasingly patient-centered, rather than drug centered. We know the shift in thinking this requires. More importantly, we are seeing the positive impact this shift has for patients and their families.
"We thank former Health Minister Liepert for his foresight in creating this committee. We now look forward to working with Minister Zwozdesky to turn the Committee's recommendations into reality."
The Alberta College of Pharmacists (ACP) supports and protects the public's health and well-being by governing the practice of pharmacists, pharmacies, and soon pharmacy technicians. ACP, and its precursor the Alberta Pharmaceutical Association, have effectively governed pharmacists and pharmacies for 98 years in Alberta.
