After 60 Years of Swimming, the Scarborough Swim Club Finally Gets a Home Pool
Scarborough Swim Club moving into new Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre this September
TORONTO, Aug. 6, 2014 /CNW/ - The Scarborough Swim Club (SCAR) is excited to be moving into their first 'home' pool since the Club was established in 1954. SCAR has announced a partnership with the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre (TPASC), opening in September 2014 at the University of Toronto's Scarborough Campus.
The new centre, which during the Games will be known as the CIBC Pan Am / Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House, includes two internationally sanctioned 10-lane, 50-metre pools with bulkheads; a five-metre deep diving tank with three-metre, five-metre, 7.5-metre and 10-metre platforms; as well as dry land dive training facilities. TPASC also features flexible gymnasium space, as well as an indoor recreational track and fitness area with state-of-the-art cardio and strength equipment.
"This is the aquatic facility that not just Scarborough has been waiting for, but also the rest of Toronto," says Darren Ward, head coach of the Scarborough Swim Club. "These pools are going to profoundly improve the quality of competitive swimming in Toronto, Ontario and even nationally."
As the local competitive swim club, the Scarborough Swim Club will have an office in the new facility and is moving the majority of its 250 swimmers to train in the new pools, including their competitive program, precompetitive "I Can Swim" program, and Masters swimming. In addition, SCAR will host their annual swim meets at the facility, including the new Scarborough Pan Am Invitational scheduled for May 1-3, 2015, a meet supported and co-marketed by TO2015 IGNITE.
TPASC will welcome thousands of community members to become healthy and active through an array of safe, educational and fun programming.
"The Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre is pleased to welcome the Scarborough Swim Club," says Robert Singleton, managing director, Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre. "As one of the oldest and most successful swim clubs in Canada, we will be working with SCAR as a local partner to train and compete in our world-class pools regularly."
