With customs tariffs being imposed on imported condiments, Maison Orphée is taking a major step by launching a new line of 100% Canadian mustards.
QUEBEC CITY, Aug. 20, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - Today Maison Orphée unveils its new line of mustards made entirely in Canada from Canadian mustard seeds. With the recent imposition of customs duties on imported condiments, the company sees an opportunity to compete with the world's agri-food giants by bringing affordable, high-quality condiments to market across the country.
Founded in Quebec City in 1983, this small family business now has 37 employees. In the wake of the debate surrounding ketchup tariffs, its owners—sisters Élisabeth and Élaine Bélanger—are proud to be taking an important step in their growth strategy by launching a line of Canadian mustards.
"Maison Orphée's goal is to be the only all-Canadian mass-market mustard on the shelf. With these everyday staples, we are confident we can compete more directly with the leading international mustard brands, while also appealing to consumers looking to buy Canadian," said Élisabeth Bélanger.
Maison Orphée recently invested $2 million to add a management information system, mustard production line, and cider vinegar production line to its operations. In addition to the new selection of mustards, three new salad dressings have been added to the product portfolio in a bid to increase Maison Orphée's market presence.
Built on a tradition of developing wholesome, simple products to make everyday meal preparation easier, the company has long been a local favourite, especially for its olive oils and salad dressings.
