TORONTO, Feb. 6, 2014 /CNW/ - Last night, RBC Royal Bank and more than 700 guests welcomed in the Year of the Horse at the RBC Chinese New Year Gala at the Hilton Suites Hotel in Markham.
The gala event marked the 26th time that RBC has hosted the annual event to recognize the Lunar New Year and show its appreciation to its Chinese clients. "RBC's ties to the Chinese community run very deep," said Dave McKay, RBC Group Head, Personal &Commercial Banking. "Tonight is an opportunity to thank our clients for both their business and their community's contributions to making us the vibrant country and cultural nexus Canada is today."
Guests, including RBC clients, community leaders and dignitaries such as Senator Vivienne Poy, Mr. Fang Li, Consul General of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in Toronto, and Mr. Jason Yu, Commercial Consul of the PRC in Toronto, were treated to an evening of first-class entertainment and incredible Chinese cuisine. The evening was capped off with a visit by the God of Fortune who distributed tokens of prosperity and brought good wishes for a healthy and happy new year.
Today's celebration reminds me of the great relations with RBC and the proactive role RBC plays in the Chinese community," said Mr. Fang Li. "Over the years, RBC has made great efforts in promoting bilateral communication and collaboration between Canada and China, which I appreciate so much."
RBC has grown along with the Chinese community in Canada since it first established a special department to serve Chinese-Canadian customers in the east end of Vancouver in 1926. In 1954, RBC became the first Canadian bank to offer financial services in China, and today has a significant and growing presence on the mainland with a full branch in Beijing.
Today, RBC and its employees support many Chinese Canadian organizations and events, including the Yee Hong Foundation, the Mon Sheong Foundation, the Centre for Information and Community Services, and many others. "In every way - socially, culturally, economically - the Chinese community has transformed this region, and for the better," said Jennifer Tory, RBC Regional President for Greater Toronto. "We're proud to be able to serve the Chinese Canadian community and are honoured to be able to celebrate with our clients, community leaders and colleagues."
