MONTRÉAL, Jan. 11, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - Suzanne Laurette Poisson (left on photo) and Hélène Gosselin, friends for more than 30 years, went to Loto-Québec headquarters on Wednesday, January 6, to claim the $23,846,591 Lotto 6/49 jackpot of January 2. The two Sherbrooke residents were beaming yet calm as they entered the winners lounge. What a great way to start the year!
The friends, who consider themselves sisters, regularly purchase lottery tickets on a weekly basis. "Sometimes I buy them, and then the next week, Hélène buys them," said Ms. Poisson. There is just one rule: "If I win, you win!" Ms. Poisson learned of the big win while checking the results on Loto-Québec's website. She phoned her friend and told her to come over because she needed to speak with her. When Ms. Gosselin said she didn't have time, Ms. Poisson insisted, saying "Listen to me! You have to come over now; we won a lot of money!" Once together, they went to a retailer establishment to confirm their stroke of luck using the self-serve ticket checker. The two accepted to meet with the press in Sherbrooke on Monday afternoon.
The winning ticket was purchased at Maxi & Cie located at 3025 Boulevard de Portland, in Sherbrooke. The retailer will receive a 1% prize of $238,465.
Loto-Québec's mission is to responsibly and efficiently manage games of chance in a controlled and measured fashion, in the interest of all Quebecers. Entertainment is at the heart of its activities. Since January 1, 2015, Loto-Québec has paid out 77 prizes worth $1 million or more.
