2018 Winter Olympic figure skating hopefuls to compete in Mississauga

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Jan. 15 /CNW/ - Over 400 figure skaters will compete on Sunday, January 24th at Tomken Twin Arena in Mississauga in the annual Snowflake competition. For some, this officially sanctioned Skate Canada - Central Ontario (COS) event will be the first opportunity to perform their solo program and hopefully take the first step on the road to the 2018 Winter Olympics. Others will take the opportunity to showcase the culmination of years of work.

This year the event is co-hosted by the Mississauga Figure Skating Club. The competition is open to eligible skaters from the fifteen skating clubs in the Metro West area and features athletes approximately 5 to 17 years in age.

"Snowflake Skate is a fun figure skating event. For many skaters, this is their first competition and the emotions involved can be overwhelming. The arena comes alive the day of the event as it fills up with skaters, coaches, families and friends. An event like Snowflake Skate can be successful only with the participation and support of local businesses, corporations and organizations - which we are very appreciative of. It's a wonderful community event, requiring many volunteers and we always look forward to co-hosting events with COS." says Heather Morrison, President of the Mississauga Figure Skating Club.

The 400 skaters involved is the equivalent of a 30 team hockey tournament happening all in one day. Medals are handed out to skaters finishing first, second and third and placement ribbons are handed out to all.
