Women peacemakers and feminists inspire unique essay collection
OTTAWA, Sept. 14, 2016 /CNW/ - An inspiring and unique collection of essays will be launched at a special event hosted by the Ottawa Writers Festival and the Nobel Women's Initiative on September 27th.
When We Are Bold: Women Who Turn Our Upsidedown World Right, is a wonderful new book whose pages gather together a remarkable group of women and provide them a platform on which to share their stories.
The content is a result of many unique pairings. High profile and talented authors from around the world write of the women who have inspired them. Their essays examine why and how women build peace in their hearts, communities and the world.
Madeleine Thien, author of the short-listed Booker Prize-nominated book Do Not Say We Have Nothing, tells the story of Chinese activist Ding Zilin, a mother who channeled the loss of her son in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in China into a movement for change. American poet, performer and activist of Cuban–Jamaican descent Aja Monet writes about her work in Palestine and of the strength she gained from fellow American poet, activist and teacher June Jordon's work. Casey Camp-Horinek, a film actor and Native rights activist from Oklahoma writes about her mother, who fearlessly resisted assimilation into the dominant white culture. Thien, Monet and Camp-Horinek will all appear at the Ottawa launch as will two Nobel peace laureates profiled in the book—Jody Williams (USA) and Tawakkol Karman (Yemen).
The book contains twenty-eight essays in all. The women writers and the women they profile come from countries all over the world including Canada, the United States, South Africa, Mexico and New Zealand. Those profiled span a 100-year period making the collection a true celebration of the peacemaking work carried out by women all over the world since World War I.
When We Are Bold: Women Who Turn Our Upsidedown World Right is an illuminating look into the lives and work of many extraordinary women. It is a collection not to be missed.
