Wapikoni Mobile will participate in the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

MONTREAL, May 7, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - On May 19 and 20, a Wapikoni delegation composed of five First Nations filmmakers and musicians renowned for their leadership, whom of which Wapikoni spokesperson, Samian, will participate in the 13th session of the Permanent Forum of the United Nations Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York. This delegation aims to develop and strengthen links with other Aboriginal organizations in Canada and worldwide. They also aim to present Wapikoni activities that will be organized in a parallel event within the UN framework.

This is Wapikoni's second partaking in the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. This year Samian, Melissa Mollen Dupuis, Emilio Wawatie, Amanda Roy and Craig Commanda, will have their hearts set on building bridges with other Aboriginal people in order to facilitate meeting and exchange – Wapikoni's very dear objective. These young people, all socially engaged with Aboriginal communities and particularly active with Wapikoni, will host an event entitled, "Wapikoni Mobile's Short Films: a strong and original voice of contemporary Aboriginal cinema" on May 19 from 1:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. This event will focus on film and music as Aboriginal empowerment vehicles.

About us

Wapikoni Mobile is a travelling studio dedicated to mediation, intervention, audiovisual and musical training and creation for First Nations youth. Since 2004, Wapikoni has visited 25 native communities in all regions of Quebec. Its 3,000 participants have worked to direct 600 short films translated into several languages and that have received 80 prizes and awards in prestigious national and international festivals.

Wapikoni Mobile is also involved in First Nations communities in Canada and in many other countries including Peru, Panama, Chile and Bolivia.
