A strong commitment to healthier, more holistic homes
TORONTO, Sept. 19, 2014 /CNW/ - Yesterday afternoon the Active House Alliance Canada was officially launched with a signing ceremony attended by construction industry leaders, architects, academia and Danish royalty. VELUX Canada is proud to have played a significant role in bringing the program to Canada and was one of the first signees of the new charter alongside Great Gulf, Roxul Inc. and Dr. John Straube of the University of Waterloo.
The launch of Active House Alliance Canada is part of a Danish Trade Mission to Canada led by Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. A business delegation of 80 Danish companies is in Toronto to strengthen partnerships with Canadian companies and the charter signing was a key event in their visit.
The Active House concept is a vision for buildings that create healthier and more comfortable lives for their occupants without negatively impacting the environment. The ultimate goal is to move toward a cleaner, healthier and safer world by uniting professional parties in a balanced and holistic approach to building design. This can include everything from the use of natural daylight and fresh air to improve a home's living space to zoned heating for thermal comfort. With over 70 years of innovation and dedication to healthier homes, VELUX has long been an advocate for the better living spaces Active House embodies. "We spend over 90 percent of our time indoors so it's important to ensure our indoors are as healthy for us as possible," says Nels Moxness, President of VELUX Canada. "VELUX has built its legacy upon designing with daylight and fresh air," two key elements that VELUX skylights deliver in spades.
The first Active House in Canada was completed last autumn with 14 operable skylights included, and has already made a significant impact on the Canadian building industry. Homeowners, builders and industry leaders have taken notice of the effect these principles have on a home and have started to demand the same in their own developments. "Buildings are designed for people to live, play and work inside," commented Kurt Emil Erikson, Secretary General of Active House in Brussels. He further described the shift the Active House concept has on the building industry where recently the focus has been on energy savings instead of "balancing the focus on comfort, energy and environment, which became the overall vision for Active House."
