UrtheCast Reports 2014 First Quarter Financial Results

VANCOUVER, May 12, 2014 /CNW/ - UrtheCast Corp. (TSX:UR) ("UrtheCast" or the "Company") is pleased to announce its financial results for the three months ending on March 31, 2014.

Recent highlights Include:

  • UrtheCast released its first Earth imagery, captured by its medium-resolution camera (MRC) onboard the International Space Station (ISS). These pictures, as well as subsequent images can be viewed online at www.urthecast.com/firstlight.

  • UrtheCast continues to progress through its commissioning phase, which is anticipated to be completed in two stages, beginning with the MRC in the second quarter of 2014, followed by the commissioning of the Ultra HD Video Camera (HRC). Our release of the first imagery from the HRC, which is contingent on the commissioning of the Bi-axial Pointing Platform, is currently expected in the third quarter of 2014.

  • UrtheCast's web developers based in San Francisco have accelerated the development of the interactive web platform that consists of web, mobile, enterprise integration, and broadcast media components. The platform will also provide technologies such as an open application programming interface (API) for developers and third party organizations to develop value-added innovation on our platform. This will allow us to augment audience engagement and reach far beyond traditional Earth Observation business models. This initiative is ongoing with some early features to be launched in the fall of 2014.

"With the successful installation of our cameras and the release of our first light images, we've begun what is proving to be a very strong year for the company," commented Scott Larson, UrtheCast's Chief Executive Officer. "Despite the current political climate, our presence aboard the ISS has been increasingly advantageous, as the Station continues to be exempt from political conflict here on Earth. Our partnerships and business development efforts remain on track and we are looking forward to continually releasing more imagery and Ultra HD color video, as well as launching our interactive web platform. Further, our business development efforts continue to go well, with strong interest from additional distributors, which would add to our current annual commitments of $26 million."

Results of Operations

UrtheCast's total operating expenses in the first quarter of 2014 were $3.9 million (2013: $1.3 million), of which $0.9 million (2013: $0.3 million) was attributable to non-cash share-based payments. Our total expenses, net of share-based payments for the three months ending March 31, 2014, were $3.0 million (2013: $1.0 million).

RESULTS OF OPERATIONS Three Months Ended March 31,
      2014   2013
  General and administrative expenses $ 2,554,385 $ 628,999
  Research expenditures   491,549   325,383
  Share-based payments   846,423   317,868
  Operating loss   3,892,357   1,272,250
Net finance (income)/costs, foreign exchange (gains)/losses and changes in fair value of derivatives   (23,397)   62,612
  Net loss   3,868,960   1,334,862
  Other comprehensive loss   3,445   3,785
  Comprehensive loss $ 3,872,405 $ 1,338,647
  Net loss per share $ 0.06 $ 0.05

UrtheCast had cash reserves of $17 million at March 31, 2014 as compared to $22 million at December 31, 2013. During the quarter our net use of cash of $5.1 million was attributed to uses of $2.8 million and $3.8 million for operating and investing activities, respectively. This was reduced with the $1.5 million received from financing activities.

At March 31, 2014, we had outstanding commitments of $0.5 million for post-delivery support of our camera equipment and for other purchases of property and equipment. Therefore, we anticipate that our cash expenditures for property and equipment in 2014 will be substantially reduced, when compared to the approximately $16.9 million spent in 2013.  Based on our expected commencement of initial operations in the second half of 2014, we expect that our cash used for operating activities will increase in 2014, as compared to the $10.5 million used in 2013.  However, the reduction in cash required for property and equipment will be substantially greater than the expected increase in cash used for operations.
