Union that uses Temporary Foreign Workers program supports rally for change
EDMONTON, March 3, 2014 /CNW/ - A union which uses the Temporary Foreign Workers program has announced its support for a rally taking place today that backs reforms to the program.
A group called Canadians Against the Temporary Foreign Workers Program has planned a rally for 9am today to protest the abuses of the program and call for reforms that will make it more fair to jobless Canadians.
"We support changes to the program that will make it harder - preferably impossible - for unscrupulous companies to import cheap labour to replace Canadian workers," says Joseph Maloney, International President of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers.
"At the same time, we urge the government not to throw the baby out with the bath water. In certain industries, like the ones our members work in, we need temporary foreign workers until we can train enough Canadian Boilermakers to keep up with demand.
"But there should be a law that foreign workers must be paid the same wages and benefits as Canadian workers. This is the standard we use in our own program. "
Mr. Maloney is available for media interviews at (780) 499-3951.
