Two more private college units join ETEA
VANCOUVER, April 4, 2013 /CNW/ - The Education and Training Employees Association (ETEA) has announced that two more groups of teaching faculty from private post-secondary institutions in downtown Vancouver have voted to unionize with them.
English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) teachers from Pan Pacific College voted unanimously on April 2, 2013 to join the ETEA.
"We salute the teachers from Pan Pacific College who spoke as one today and proclaimed they want a say in their workplace and the conditions under which they exercise their profession," stated Michael Wicks, President of the ETEA.
Meanwhile, teachers from Western Town Business College (WTBC), a Career College registered under BC's Private Career Training Institutions Act, also voted unanimously to join the ETEA several weeks prior on March 21, 2013.
Faculty at WTBC have become the second group of non-ESL teachers from a private post-secondary institution to join the ETEA.
Kevin Drager, a member of the ETEA Organizing Committee, spoke to the larger significance of these latest certifications: "With WTBC and Pan Pacific College, we have now had three certifications in the last nine months. Teachers at private colleges are standing up to have a collective professional voice in their workplaces."
Drager went on to say, "We look forward to supporting these teachers as they go through bargaining their first collective agreements."
