This strike is about accessible, high quality education, says union
Members to distribute free newspaper at TTC stations across Toronto
TORONTO, March 19, 2015 /CNW/ - Striking education workers from York University are widening the debate about higher education by distributing a free newspaper around the city. Represented by Local 3903 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 3903), the student workers stress that their strike is about accessible, high quality education.
Media are invited to the distribution of the inaugural run of The Penguin, the union-made newspaper that explains the reasons for the strike, on Thursday, March 19 at 3:00 p.m. at the corner of College Street and University Avenue. The union has printed 50,000 copies, which it will distribute at TTC stations across Toronto.
"Our strike is about stopping the continual rise in tuition fees," says Faiz Ahmed, chair of CUPE 3903. "In the last 15 years, tuition fees in Ontario have increased by 80 per cent. We believe that everyone has a right to high quality education, but fees limit accessibility."
The newspaper also promotes a city-wide rally for accessible, high quality education to be held on Saturday, March 21 at 1:00 p.m. at Dundas Square. The Ontario Federation of Labour, the Toronto & York Region Labour Council, the Canadian Federation of Students – Ontario, and others have endorsed the rally.
