The Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) honours Rick Hansen with 2012 President's Award

VICTORIA, June 13, 2012 /CNW/ - Canadian Paralympian and spinal cord injury activist, Rick Hansen, is the recipient of the 2012 CPRS President's Award for Outstanding Public Relations and Communications Management. The prestigious public relations honour is awarded to an individual who demonstrates outstanding leadership in communications. Hansen and other award winners were acknowledged at the CPRS National Awards of Excellence gala on the final day of the Canadian Public Relations Conference, Currents 2012.

"The Board of Directors of the Canadian Public Relations Society is so pleased to honour a Canadian icon like Rick Hansen with this President's Award.  Rick epitomizes for us all the talent and effort it takes to create messaging, branding, and affiliation with one's stakeholders," said Past CPRS President, Pierrette Leonard APR, FCPRS. "In all matters Rick has touched to support his work, he gives it his all across the board to tap into the hearts and minds of Canadians."

Rick Hansen was recognized for the continued success of his foundation, The Rick Hansen Foundation, in helping spread the message of making the world more accessible and inclusive. The foundation continues to successfully raise funds for spinal cord injury research.

"On behalf of my entire organization and our communications team, I want to let you know what an honour it is to be recognized by the public relations community," said Hansen in a video acceptance speech at the awards ceremony. "Our culture is so engaged in the delivery of information; the mandate of your work is such a key cog in our age of content. You are the storytellers for Canadian organizations and I want to thank each and every one of you for making a difference in the lives of individuals in this country and around the world."

This is the third time that the CPRS President's Award for Outstanding Public Relations and Communications Management has been awarded to an individual. Other recipients include General (retired) Rick Hillier and Kellie Garrett, Senior VP, Strategy, Knowledge & Reputation at Farm Credit Canada. The Major Awards recognize exceptional involvement in the public relations profession.
