TORONTO, June 19, 2012 /CNW/ - Michelle and Ken Fields of Tecumseh will
receive a Fire Safety Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety
Council at a ceremony on June 26, 2012 in Toronto. The annual Fire
Safety Awards recognize outstanding contributions to fire protection
and prevention in Ontario.
The Fields are a retired couple who contribute hundreds of volunteer
hours each year to the Windsor-Essex Children's Safety Village. This
inspiring couple has taken on the time-consuming job of booking all of
the Safety Village classes for Windsor Fire and Rescue Services and
other emergency services in the surrounding area. This allows the
public educators of these services to spend their time teaching fire
safety to an even greater number of people in their communities.
Working full-time from their own home during the months of May, June,
September and October, they prepare letters to schools, book classes
and visit schools and local school boards to promote fire and police
The Fields also volunteer for many special events that are held at the
Safety Village and spend two weekends during the summer months raising
money for the Village by selling corn-on-the-cob.
"Michelle and Ken will not accept any remuneration for these services,
which they have tirelessly performed for the past eight years," said
Ted Wieclawek, Ontario Fire Marshal. "They volunteer in the memory of
their son, Brett, who was fatally injured in a motor vehicle crash in
2001. Although Brett never realized his dream of working in emergency
services, his parents' have selflessly taken up his cause through their
devotion to helping others learn to be safe."
The Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council gratefully acknowledges
the support of its sponsors in this event: Technical Standards and
Safety Authority, The Co-operators Group, Kidde Canada Inc., Home Depot
of Canada Inc., Proctor & Gamble Inc., Domino's Pizza of Canada,
Electrical Safety Authority, Canadian Standards Association Group and
Enbridge Gas Distribution.
