Statement from CMA President Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti: New federal innovation advisory panel big step in spending smarter on health care

OTTAWA, June 24, 2014 /CNW/ - Health Minister Rona Ambrose has taken a welcome step in appointing an advisory panel on health care innovation. We applaud this panel's plan to focus recommendations on potential federal actions that will complement provincial and territorial efforts to improve their health systems.

The Canadian Medical Association agrees with the minister that embracing and supporting innovation is the key to improving quality health care for Canadians. This is particularly true when it comes to seniors care.

Far too many seniors are in hospital beds across the country when they could — and should — be in either long-term care facilities or at home with assistance. Unfortunately, we face a serious deficit in community care facilities and programs. This is a part of the system where we badly need innovation and a national strategy.

Minister Ambrose stressed the need for innovation when she took over the health portfolio less than a year ago. We are pleased to see her solidify the federal government's leadership role in health care. Canada's doctors look forward to collaborating with the Advisory Panel on Health Care Innovation and offer our support to advance their efforts.
