Statement from Chief Ralph Dominelli, Orillia Fire Department
ORILLIA, ON, April 13, 2012 /CNW/ - The Coroner's Inquest into the deaths resulting from the Muskoka Heights fire in 2009 begins on Monday April 16, 2012.
On behalf of the Orillia Fire Department, I want to once again extend my condolences to the friends and families of those who perished and those who were injured in this terrible incident.
This fire was a once in a lifetime fire and the largest fire involving rescues in Orillia's history. I want to recognize the hard work and dedication of the members of the Orillia Professional Fire Fighters Association, our volunteer fire fighters and the fire fighters from Severn and Rama First Nation, all of whom performed admirably in what can only be described as a very difficult situation.
In addition I want to recognize the OPP, paramedics and the staff at Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital who worked with the fire fighters throughout the course of the day and into the investigation and recovery.
In terms of the incident, like any fire or emergency situation I am sure that there are lessons to be learned. I welcome the Coroner's Inquest both as an examination of the incident and for any of the findings which will help not only improve fire safety in care occupancies in Orillia, but throughout Ontario and Canada.
