'Social deficit' in SE Calgary on display in documentary

Initiative Helps Fund Sports Programs In The City's Underprivileged Areas

CALGARY, May 14, 2014 /CNW/ - The Big Give Project is releasing its 4 years in the making documentary showcasing the 'social deficit' in SE Calgary with funds raised benefiting annual Send-A-Kid-To-Camp campaign.

Wednesday, May 14, 2014 The Big Give Project ("Big Give"), a Calgary-based charity that aims to level the playing field for student athletes by providing financing to school and community athletic programs will be releasing the world premiere screening of their documentary produced by Urban Revolver and presented by Woodward Asset Management at the Theatre Junction Grand (608 1st St SW) from 5pm - 10pm.

Four years in the making, the documentary explores the 'Social deficit' in SE Calgary' contrasting communities with focus on the variation in social and financial constraints in the lives of student athletes. Adam Woodward and Dave Wilder, founders of The Big Give hope to give government representatives and the general public a wake-up call about the lack of infrastructure in areas of Calgary like Forest Lawn. "We shot footage at Marlborough Mall and the C-Train where these kids hang out. We want to shake enough trees so that decision makers at the budgetary level can say, 'We need to put something behind these kids'," said Woodward. Their project aims to prove that developing the proper infrastructure in the places that need it most not only keeps kids out of trouble, but teaches them to overcome adversity; a big step towards a better life.

All funds raised from the documentary release will support The Big Give's annual Send-A-Kid-To-Camp campaign- launched this year. The program is geared towards student basketball players who could greatly benefit from attending a summer camp, but are in need of some financial assistance. With the help of the Calgary Senior and Junior High School Athletics programs, The Big Give is looking to send 200 kids to basketball camp this summer.

Long-term, Big Give founders Adam Woodward and Dave Wilder plan on a mass fundraising campaign to construct a "super campus" right behind Forest Lawn High School that would feature a basketball dome, soccer centre as well as retail and boardroom space.

A media scrum will be held after the documentary at approximately 7pm May 14, 2014. Broadcast production and interview footage will be taken with key guests that can be released for use within 24hrs of the release. Event photos can be sent post-event in a media package. A public release will be held late 2014. Contact us directly with questions regarding media and attendance. Conversation for this event can be followed at #BGBigScreen and @BigGiveProject
