Sheffield awarded Lamp of Service for commitment to Canadian Public Relations Society

OTTAWA-GATINEAU, June 25, 2013 /CNW/ - The Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) named Barbara Sheffield APR, FCPRS LM, Vice-President, PR/Media Connection, the winner of the 2013 CPRS Lamp of Service. Sheffield was recognized for her dedicated service to CPRS and the public relations profession over some 40 years. She was presented with a framed certificate following the Diana and Charles Tisdall Lecture on June 10 in Gatineau, QC.

"My thanks to those I have worked with over the years for this wonderful recognition. I have always said that it is one thing to hold a membership in an organization and quite another to be a member.  Contribution of time and talent should be on every member's agenda and I encourage all members to become engaged in demonstrating professionalism to advance the profession," said Sheffield.

Sheffield has been actively involved with the Society ever since she became a member in 1975. She has served on numerous committees and councils at the local Society (Toronto) level as well as the national level, such as Presiding Officer of the National Education Committee and National Council on Accreditation as well as serving as CPRS National President — the first woman to hold this position — in 1990-91. In addition, she was responsible for establishing a task force that resulted in the creation of the CPRS College of Fellows. In 2002 she was awarded the prestigious CPRS Philip A. Novikoff Memorial Award. Today Sheffield can be found serving the Communications + Public Relations Foundation as executive director, a position she's held since 2010.

"When Barbara Sheffield puts her mind to achieving, changing or starting something, chances are very good that she'll succeed," said Bart Mindszenthy APR, FCPRS LM, past presiding officer, CPRS College of Fellows. "I cannot think of any other CPRS member who has been committed to advancing the profession and has kept this topic front and centre for public relations practitioners."

The CPRS Lamp of Service is awarded to a CPRS member whose personal activities and/or leadership and dedication have resulted in the advancement of the Society. It was one of several noteworthy CPRS awards presented this year. The Major Awards recognize exceptional involvement in the public relations profession and candidates are nominated by peers.
