Remarkable local architecture initiative lays foundation to make Waterloo Region an international cultural destination

KITCHENER, ON, May 22, 2014 /CNW/ - The most ambitious architecture festival ever staged in Canada will kick off in Waterloo Region starting July 4, 2014.

Building Waterloo Region (BWR) includes events and exhibitions across Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo, in collaboration with leading public galleries, museums, arts and educational institutions, provincial associations and private partners.

BWR uses architecture as the connective thread, highlighting key eras and catalysts to tell the story of industry and creativity propelling Waterloo Region into the limelight from the turn of the 20th century onward.

"Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge have made some extraordinary urban design decisions and caught the attention of architects around the world," said Rick Haldenby, BWR lead curator and former director of the University of Waterloo, School of Architecture.

"Building Waterloo Region celebrates what we've done right, from Kitchener City Hall to the way we've integrated new start-ups into our downtown cores. We are moving into a new phase of urban history in Canada. Waterloo Region has a lot to teach the world about how the last 60 years can help shape urban design for the next century."

Building Waterloo Region is part of the first Festival of Art, Architecture and Sound taking place throughout Waterloo Region this year, along with CAFKA.14 and Open Ears.
