Ottawa Dad Releases Book on 'Democratic Parenting'

OTTAWA, Feb. 16, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Who teaches us to be parents?  How can we teach discipline to our children without punishments or rewards?  How can we teach our children right from wrong in a world with so many contradicting ideals?  Democratic Parenting is a book for parents with kids aged one to twelve, written by Ottawa-Gatineau local and doctor of Chinese medicine, Blaise T. Ryan, that addresses these questions.

"Democratic Parenting is the evolution beyond authoritarian and permissive parenting methods," says Blaise.  "It systematically builds mutual trust and respect between parent and child, inspiring self-discipline, good judgment and clear thinking - without coercion, threats or bribes."

Instead of using rewards and punishments to discipline kids, this book proposes using a special kind of communication, natural consequences and other methods to keep peace and order in the home and school.  Does it work for severe behavioural challenges like ADHD, autism, aggression and bullying?

"It's natural for all kids to misbehave and test our patience,"  says Blaise, who also offers private parent-child consultations in the Ottawa Area.  "But when these issues become chronic, or when they develop into severe problems, parents need to take swift action to prevent future difficulties.  The biggest mistake that parents make is that they focus on the behaviour itself, rather than addressing the root-cause of it."

The book outlines three overarching reasons why kids misbehave.  Then it provides non-punitive and non-incentive solutions for how to shift the "problem child" from being socially or mentally withdrawn to being more engaged and cooperative with the world and people around them. The methods include practical ways to relate and talk with kids so that they listen, pay attention and respect parents.
