OPP Reminds Motorists of the Dangers of Winter Driving

AURORA, ON, Jan. 4, 2012 /CNW/ - On January 3, 2012, seven young people, ranging in age between 17 and 19 years of age tragically lost their lives in two separate multi-vehicle collisions which occurred within four hours of each other. These fatal collisions were both related to winter driving conditions.

As a result of the circumstances surrounding these avoidable tragedies the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists of how important it is to constantly adjust driving behaviour to the road conditions.

Weather changes, particularly during the winter, can occur suddenly and dramatically in Ontario.  Without warning, sudden storms and plunging temperatures can drastically change road conditions and reduce visibility.

"It is critical that motorists adjust their driving behaviour to the weather conditions, which can change rapidly and without warning. Driving too fast for the road conditions is the number one cause of winter collisions," said Deputy Commissioner Larry Beechey, Provincial Commander of Traffic Safety.  "Even on a sunny day, black ice is a constant danger and drivers should always assume its presence."

The OPP is asking for the assistance of the public and parents in particular to speak to their young drivers about the inherent dangers of winter driving and to lead by example.  Chief Superintendent Don Bell, Commander of the OPP Highway Safety Division says "Far too many people are continuing to take risks and are paying the ultimate sacrifice.  Together we can teach drivers of all ages to become not just good drivers, but good road users."
