Ontario graduate students launch campaign to address bullying and harassment

TORONTO, Nov. 7, 2013 /CNW/ - Ontario graduate students are launching a province-wide survey on bullying and harassment on university campuses. The survey, Not in the Syllabus, is the first of its kind in Ontario and will inform the development of campus resources designed to identify and confront bullying, harassment and mental health issues for graduate students.

"Whether it is strained relationships with a supervisor or a toxic work environment, graduate students face unique challenges and pressures," said Kevin Godbout, Chairperson of the Ontario Graduate Caucus of the Canadian Federation of Students. "We need services and programs that recognize the varying responsibilities graduates students have as researchers, workers and students."

The online survey asks graduate students to identify and describe incidents related to bullying, harassment and mental health issues that they have either personally experienced or witnessed. The information will be compiled into a provincial report and used to develop workshops that will be delivered to graduate students across the province.

"Graduate students, like all members of the academic community, deserve safe working and learning conditions," said Alastair Woods, Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario. "This campaign will ensure graduate students are leading the way on addressing bullying, harassment and mental health."

Not in the Syllabus is a joint project of the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario, the Public Service Alliance of Canada Ontario and the Ontario University Workers Coordinating Committee of the Canadian Union of Public Employees-Ontario.

The Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario represents more than 300,000 college and university students, including more than 90 per cent of graduate students in the province.
