CALGARY, June 24, 2014 /CNW/ - Old Dutch Foods introduced an exciting new contest last March in conjunction with their sponsorship of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) -- sending 18 lucky minor hockey coaches to the Old Dutch Coaching Academy at the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup in London, Ontario, May 23 to 26, 2014.
Hockey parents from across Canada nominated their favourite and well-deserved minor hockey coaches and a panel of judges from the CHL and Old Dutch chose the 18 winning coaches by judging the essays that were included with each nomination. And every valid entry was eligible to win a 2014 Dodge Journey.
The winner of the 2014 Dodge Journey is Hugh Waterton from Delta, BC.
Mr. Waterton will be awarded his beautiful new vehicle at Go Auto Surrey on Saturday, June 28 at 1:00pm. Go Auto Surrey invites you to join them at 6280 Scotts Road in Surrey for BBQ goodies and to congratulate Mr. Waterton.
THE 2014 OLD DUTCH COACHING ACADEMY
The Old Dutch Coaching Academy was held on Saturday, May 24, 2014 in the Sports Centre at the Western Fair District in London, Ontario, as part of the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup. This was a very unique opportunity, led on the ice and in the classroom by Brian Kilrea, the most successful coach in CHL history. Kilrea led two Memorial Cup championships, is a five-time OHL Top Coach winner, 1997 CHL Coach of the Year, and 2003 Hall of Fame Inductee. Kilrea was flanked by Stan Butler, Director of Hockey Operations & Head Coach of the North Bay Battalion, and Matt Rabideau, Assistant General Manager & Director of Player Development, also with the North Bay Battalion of the OHL.
Two of the 18 minor hockey coaches are from BC, and here's what they had to say about their experience:
KELLY MCGARRY, LOGAN LAKE, BC
Brian, Stan and Matt put on a fantastic clinic, what coach would not want to spend time with those three. What a wealth of knowledge! They gave us their full attention as a group and individually all weekend. And to Old Dutch, I greatly appreciate your efforts on putting this weekend together. To put together a clinic that was such a large benefit to a coach at any level or calibre is remarkable. It was well organized and bringing in CCM/Reebok and Sportsnet was awesome!
RICHARD VARELA, COMOX, BC
Had a blast - learned a lot - met some GREAT folks. Even saw Bobby Orr!
Each of the 18 very deserving minor hockey coaches won a trip to the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup in London, ON, hotel accommodations, spending money, and VIP tickets to the final game. They also received jerseys, hats, sticks, gloves and helmets, courtesy of Reebok/CCM and Old Dutch. Sportsnet covered the event, and the video featuring Rob Faulds is on the Old Dutch YouTube channel.
