Nipissing University Student Union Denounces Tuition Increases

NORTH BAY, ON, June 7, 2013 /CNW/ - Last night, the Nipissing University Board of Governors approved an operating budget of $73.6 million for 2013-2014, including a tuition fee increase of three per cent. Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) representatives did not vote to approve the budget due to the increase in fees.

"Students could not, in good conscience, vote in favour of a budget that includes a tuition fee increase, even though we support the university's investments in the quality of academic programs and student services," said Kayla Fitzsimmons, NUSU President.  "The Nipissing University Student Union chose to abstain from the budget vote to demonstrate our conflicted position on the presented budget."

NUSU is working with university administration to advocate for increases to government grants and not tuition increases. The Ministry of Training, College and Universities currently sets the student funding formula and has recently indicated that universities may increase tuition at a rate of three per cent each year over the next four years.

The Nipissing University Student Union is the official body representing the student point of view in the university's administration and academic decisions. NUSU represents full-time and part-time students at both the North Bay and Muskoka Campuses of Nipissing University.
