OTTAWA, Nov. 19, 2013 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Julian
Fantino, Ted Opitz, Member of Parliament for Etobicoke Centre, joined
the Ottawa 67's and their fans to pay tribute to Korean War Veterans at
a pre-game ceremonial puck drop. A Korean War theme was the focus of a
game between the hometown club and the visiting Belleville Bulls in
Ontario Major Junior Hockey League action. The event is a partnership
involving Branch 618 of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Ottawa 67's
Hockey Club, the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa area school boards and
Veterans Affairs Canada.
"Our Government and sports leagues across Canada share a common
commitment to increase the visibility of remembrance, especially among
youth, for Canada's Veterans—past and present," said Minister Fantino.
"Today's puck drop and game go one step further and increase awareness
of the Korean War and of the contributions made by Canada's Korean War
"This annual event is a great way to connect to youth and create
awareness of the tremendous contributions made by Canada's Veterans,"
said Member of Parliament Opitz. "Congratulations to the many groups
involved in making this such a successful commemorative partnership."
Approximately 12,000 young fans attended the game and received a
commemorative booklet on the Korean War.
2013 is the Year of the Korean War Veteran—Canada proudly remembers the
heroes of the Korean War and their brave fight to defend the Republic
