Media Notice - Leading Canadian researchers to present new findings at Fetal Alcohol Canadian Expertise (FACE) research meeting, Saturday, September 7, 2013, St. John's, NL
ST. JOHN'S, NL, Sept. 6, 2013 /CNW/ - Mr. Dan Crummell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Advanced Education and Skills (Apprenticeship and Labour Market), NL, will address the delegates at 8:10 a.m.
Researchers will then present their latest findings in fetal alcohol research and FASD intervention. FASD stands for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and is the leading cause of developmental disability in North America.
Canadians on the cutting edge of fetal alcohol research will report new findings on:
- a highly sensitive biomarker for multi-organ injury in fetuses exposed to moderate doses of alcohol;
- a 9-year study on the prevalence of drug use during pregnancy;
- how information about supports and services for individuals with FASD is communicated, what is working and what is not working;
- effective treatment for young offenders with FASD.
Winners of a new round of research funding will be announced by the Canadian Foundation on Fetal Alcohol Research (CFFAR).
FACE: The FACE Research Association includes researchers, clinicians, front-line workers, government and industry representatives and policy-makers from across Canada. Since 2000, the FACE meeting has been held each year in cities throughout Canada with the help and participation of provincial ministers of health, early childhood development, child and family services, and Health Canada. The annual meeting is sponsored in part by the Brewers Association of Canada.
CFFAR: Created in September 2007 through a 5-year $1 million commitment by the Brewers Association of Canada (BAC), CFFAR is an independent, non-profit foundation created to promote interest and fund research related to the short and long-term bio-medical, psychological and social effects of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, and the prevention of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.
