Media Advisory - Ontario Nurses' Association President Will Rally With BC Nurses Today
VANCOUVER, March 6, 2014 /CNW/ - The President of the Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) will join hundreds of nurses in Vancouver today to demand safe staffing and safe care for patients.
Linda Haslam-Stroud, RN, is also speaking at the rally and march organized by the British Columbia Nurses' Union (BCNU); she will join BCNU President Debra McPherson, Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) President Linda Silas and United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) President Heather Smith in drawing attention to the risks patients are being exposed to as declining numbers of RN staffing impact patient care.
Nurses will march to the north side of the Vancouver Art Gallery at 3 pm Toronto time (noon in Vancouver); Haslam-Stroud will speak to demand more nurses to provide the safe, quality care that patients deserve.
ONA is currently airing TV commercials across Ontario to inform the public of the RN cuts that have been occurring in the province. Ontario has the second-lowest RN-to-population ratio in the country; only BC has fewer.
ONA is the union representing 60,000 registered nurses and allied health professionals, as well as more than 14,000 nursing student affiliates providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics and industry.
