Media Advisory - ONA Nurses to Hold Information Picket:
RNs want to raise awareness that long-term care bed transfer mean RN cuts:
HAMILTON and BURLINGTON, ON, Nov. 4, 2014 /CNW/ - Registered nurses working at St. Olga's LifeCare Centre and Cama Woodlands long-term care facilities will hold information pickets this Wednesday in Hamilton and Thursday in Burlington.
The Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) members will be raising awareness of a decision to transfer resident beds from St. Olga's in Hamilton to Cama Woodlands in Burlington on November 27. With the move, the employer is laying off all RNs at St. Olga's, in violation of the nurses' collective agreement.
The new nursing schedule cuts by half the number of RNs responsible for caring for residents of the new 128-bed facility, leaving the health care of these frail, elderly residents at risk. ONA believes that the new bricks and mortar of Cama Woodlands does not make good nursing care.
RNs want the public to understand that in addition to being a home to the residents, it is also needs to be a facility that meets their health care needs. Residents deserve respect, dignity and appropriate nursing support.
ONA is the union representing 60,000 nurse practitioners, registered nurses and allied health professionals, as well as more than 14,000 nursing student affiliates providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics and industry.
