9,300 new initiations in the last 15 months
TORONTO, Nov. 14, 2012 /CNW/ - LIUNA Local 183, Canada's largest construction local, has increased its membership to over 32,000 in the past year and signed over $2 billion in new work. This remarkable growth reflects the commitment of the new executive team to enforce the union's collective agreements and aggressively seek new work.
"Our members are what makes this union the best in North America. Our continued growth and strength is evidence of our values and the role we play in the GTA and Ontario economy," said Jack Oliveira, Business Manager for Local 183.
Just 6 months after local elections, the new executive board had implemented every one of the commitments in its election platform. Highlights from the past year include:
- Signing over $2 billion of new business contracts.
- Enforcing collective agreement obligations to ensure members are paid what they are owed, delivering an additional $7 million to date.
- Significant improvements to member and retiree benefits
- Hiring top professionals in key executive roles
- Opening a new "one-stop" information centre to assist members
"Transparency and accountability are the values that have lead to our success over the past year" said Oliveira. "Our retirees, members and their families are better off as a result."
