Leading the Resilience: Alec Hay positions DIALOG

TORONTO, May 14, 2013 /CNW/ - Alec Hay recently joined the DIALOG Toronto studio in a new role of Resilience and Security Planning Leader to further expand our leading sustainability practice into the quickly emerging field of resilience. Alec will work with clients to help them better understand future shocks and stresses that could impact their operations--such as extreme weather events--and develop resilience and security plans that will inform both their capital and operations planning. Alec will assist clients in their evolution from demand management (sustainability) to demand and dependency management (resilience), promoting a systems approach to structure and infrastructure design.

"It will be great to work with someone of Alec's exceptional capabilities," says Jim Anderson, Managing Principal at the DIALOG Toronto studio. "He is well known as one of world's thought leaders in resilience engineering. Resilience is still an emerging discipline--particularly here in North America--and Alec is one of the very few people in the world able to generate compelling solutions to what can be extremely complex briefs while at the same time being very thoughtful and responsive to client needs. Alec's joining our studio will nicely complement the resilience planning and design work being done by DIALOG Principal Craig Applegath."

Prior to joining DIALOG, Alec was the Senior British Liaison Officer to the Canadian Army and he is currently Director of the University of Toronto Centre for Resilience of Critical Infrastructure. In a consultant capacity he has directed and/or managed $400M of projects across Canada, the Arctic, British South Atlantic Islands, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Alec believes that DIALOG, with its increasing focus on resilience, can provide key leadership in the development of resilience planning in the Americas.

"We know there are hazards that will affect buildings and infrastructure--Hurricane Sandy provides a stark example," he says. "Our role will not be to assess risk or probabilities but to create plans that respond to identified hazards. We can then collectively decide whether it is more important to preserve the capital investment or maintain operational capacity. Indeed, designing resilient infrastructure to enable operational resilience is becoming increasingly critical, and our goal is to provide our clients with integrated resilience knowledge and expertise that will allow them to make the most effective decisions in a rapidly changing and increasingly confusing world."

DIALOG has a track record of award-winning integrated building design and planning with a focus on the success of our clients and our communities. Working from studios in Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver, DIALOG credits this success to its multidisciplinary teams who employ a unique, collaborative approach to the provision of architectural, engineering, interior design, planning, urban design, and landscape architecture services.
