L'Actuel sur rue opens its doors

A new structure to increase the accessibility of its services, care and intervention in the prevention of HIV/STI/HEPATITIS: the only community and medical approach of its kind in Canada.

MONTREAL, July 16, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Clinique médicale l'Actuel, a high-level centre dealing with HIV/STI/hepatitis, is happy to announce the opening of a new service point, allowing it to make its services more accessible to at-risk clientele.

"Statistics indicate that HIV and STI are steadily increasing in Québec," explains Réjean Thomas, president-founder of Clinique médicale l'Actuel and Clinique A. "And yet, a significant proportion of the at-risk population is not being reached, as these people are reluctant to enter the clinical or hospital setting."

Reminding you that 25% of Quebecers living with HIV and 50% of patients suffering from Hepatitis C are unaware of their condition and are therefore not under a doctor's care.

What motivated Dr. Thomas and his team to set up l'Actuel sur rue, a new walk-in service point in the heart of the Village, on Ste. Catherine St. E. (corner Panet). Unique in Canada, this type de structure already exists in such major European cities as Amsterdam, Paris, Geneva and Barcelona.

Under the supervision of a medical director, nurses and community staff offer counseling services, free rapid screening for HIV and Hepatitis C, as well as hepatitis vaccination. Information pamphlets on PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PReP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and new treatments, as well as condoms, are available on site.

L'Actuel sur rue offers easy and supportive access to health services in order to integrate or re-integrate at-risk clientele into a global continuum of prevention and care. Its approach, combining community intervention with a medical setting, is unique in Canada. After a consultation in l'Actuel sur Rue, those needing medical care will be referred to Clinique médicale l'Actuel or Clinique A.

"With no appointments necessary, l'Actuel sur rue promotes accessible screening services and information on prevention, reduces obstacles, and extends the corridor of services and care to a greater number of people," explains Dr Thomas. "Above all, we want people to feel comfortable about coming in and speaking with our personnel so they can receive quality services, relevant information, and be directed towards medical care if necessary."
