LONDON, ON, Feb. 7, 2012 /CNW/ - Take the plunge for kids living with cancer. On Saturday, March 3, 2012, Sears invites you to participate and join
fellow Canadians in the Sears Great Canadian Chill, a polar bear swim
established by Sears as an annual tradition that sees Canadians brave
icy waters while raising money for an important cause. Proceeds from
The Chill will support paediatric oncology research and treatment
initiatives at Children's Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre.
"The Sears Great Canadian Chill is one of the many ways Sears supports
children and families living in the communities where we do business,"
said Calvin McDonald, President and CEO, Sears Canada Inc., who was
born and raised in London. "Participating in the Sears Great Canadian
Chill is a great way to bring families together for a day of fun while
helping other families who are in the fight of their life."
At the event, Chillers will jump into a custom built pool at Victoria
Park, braving the chilly temperatures, while donning bathing suits and
zany costumes. The family-friendly event will invite supporters to join
in for a day of fun, entertainment and fundraising. The event will
feature a spirited presence from groups of students from Western
University and students from London area High Schools through the
"Kids4Kids" outreach program. Participants and spectators will be
hosted under heated tents while they enjoy entertainment, prizes for
top fundraising and the highly anticipated costume contest for those
who wish to participate. Those interested can log on to www.TheChill.ca and register to participate in the polar bear swim on their own, with
friends or with family members and raise funds for the fight against
this devastating disease. Each registered Chiller can create a
participant profile on the website, personalize a fundraising page and
send donation requests and thank you notes to family and
friends. Spectators who just want to chill out and not take the plunge
are not required to register. General donations or participant
sponsorship are welcome and can be made through TheChill.ca website.
The Sears Great Canadian Chill will raise funds for the Sears Canada
Charitable Foundation. Half of the donations made by the Foundation
will benefit paediatric oncology programs at the Children's Hospital.
The remainder will benefit national paediatric oncology research
initiatives, such as The Sears Childhood Cancer Fellowship.
"We are most appreciative of the financial support Children's Hospital
at London Health Sciences will receive as a result of the generosity
from The Sears Great Canadian Chill," said Debbie Comuzzi, President
and CEO of Children's Health Foundation. "The money raised by the event
participants and Sears for childhood cancer care and research will help
make cancer treatments safer for children, minimizing the side effects
of chemotherapy and radiation, and support the families through
programs that provide the absolute best care."
