Investor Education Fund (IEF) congratulates Jane Rooney on her appointment as Canada's Financial Literacy Leader
IEF Looks Forward to Collaborating to Elevate Financial Literacy in Canada
TORONTO, April 15, 2014 /CNW/ - Investor Education Fund (IEF), Canada's leading advocate for financial literacy, congratulates Jane Rooney on her new role as the Federal government's Financial Literacy Leader and welcomes the opportunity to work together to increase Canadian financial knowledge. "We look to Jane to help unify the tremendous education and independent resources already at work in this area," said Tom Hamza, President of Investor Education Fund (IEF) (www.GetSmarterAboutMoney.ca).
Jane Rooney brings invaluable public sector experience to the role, including more than a decade at the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada working on financial literacy. "IEF has worked with Jane in the past and we have always been impressed by her knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm. She knows how to get things done."
"The time is now for Canada's financial literacy community to work together to change Canadians' behaviour," said Hamza. The appointment comes at a moment when Canadian household debt is at record levels and Canadians are looking for independent answers and learning tools.
"Financial literacy is about educating people to act. It is about making people think independently and ask more of their financial institutions. This is a world of complex financial products, and we need to communicate with Canadians so they understand their options and are motivated in a more self-interested way about their money."
Investor Education Fund (IEF) is a non-profit organization founded and supported by the Ontario Securities Commission that provides unbiased and independent financial tools to help Canadians make better money decisions. IEF offers research-based financial information to consumers via GetSmarterAboutMoney.ca and to students, parents and teachers through InspireFinancialLearning.ca and extensive classroom programs.
