Hotwire Unveils Top 10 Destinations Travellers Are Heading To Celebrate Canada's Birthday

Canadian Cities Dominate the List this Year as More Folks Plan to Travel

SAN FRANCISCO, June 18, 2012 /CNW/ -®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the top 10 most popular Canada Day destinations, based on hotel bookings. Unlike last year, when the list was evenly split between Canadian and U.S. locations, this year Canadians are sticking close to home to celebrate La Fete du Canada with seven of the 10 most booked destinations residing in their own backyard. New to the list in 2012 are Niagara Falls, Calgary and Halifax, which bumped off two U.S. cities – Boston and Minneapolis – from the 2011 list. What's also different this time around is that more Canadians are expected to travel for the holiday compared to last year.

Travellers seem to be heading to the same top five destinations as last year, although the rankings have shifted slightly. Toronto remains the top destination for Canada's national day; however Ottawa, the country's capital and focus of many Canada Day celebrations, has moved up to replace Montreal as the second most popular location. Montreal fell to the number three spot, while New York City moved up to number four. Finally, closing out the top five is Vancouver, which dropped down from its previous number four ranking.

"With the great deals on hotel and car rentals throughout Canada, it is no wonder that more folks are traveling and opting to celebrate Canada Day throughout the country instead of visiting border US cities like they did last year," said Pierre-Etienne Chartier, vice president of the Hotwire Group. "We're encouraging travellers to take advantage of these discounts, and to get out and participate in all the outdoor events, parades and festivals celebrating everything Canada."
