OTTAWA, May 11, 2016 /CNW/ - Ashcroft Homes has started on the required work to retain the heritage façade that will be incorporated in-situ into their ReResidences luxury condominiums. The project is located within the Sparks Street Heritage Conservation District.
The façade has been carefully dismantled and stored off-site pending restoration while work on the site is underway. As far back as 2013, City heritage planners reported that the wood facade was in a "fragile state" and needed work to stabilize it as the structural integrity was lacking.
To ensure that everything is handled with the utmost care, the façade will be delicately restored off-site before being reinserted into the new ReResidences building. Until then, for the first time in over 150 years - and last time ever - visitors can see all the way through from Queen Street to Sparks Street until the restored façade is reassembled and reinstalled.
Known as Canlands 'A' project on a historic site between Queen and Sparks Street, ReResidences encompasses a heritage front façade at 108-116 Sparks Street near Metcalfe St. All parties, including the City of Ottawa and the National Capital Commission along with Ashcroft Homes, agree on the desirability of maintaining and incorporating the heritage façade into ReResidences.
The years have not been kind to the building. Originally constructed in 1870 and 1875, the commercial address was remodeled in the 1890's and renovated as a theatre in the 1910's when an auditorium was added to the rear then subsequently demolished in the 1970's. Various retailers tenanted the front portion on Sparks Street in later years.
Ashcroft Homes is invested in maintaining the heritage aspect of the iconic setting for future generations as a piece of history, not only for the city but the country. The process of approving the heritage treatment has been a lengthy one finally allowing the demolition and construction to begin.
