COR-Kashruth Council of Canada marks May as Kosher Restaurant Month in the world's most multicultural city

TORONTO, May 6, 2013 /CNW/ - In France they say "bon appetit," but for approximately 200,000 Jewish people in the Greater Toronto Area, we say "b'teavon."  But you don't have to be Jewish to love kosher food!

May is Kosher Restaurant Month, with 33 participating kosher restaurants in the GTA offering 10% off their regular menus to encourage Torontonians to come out and support their local kosher eateries. From falafel and shawarma spots to fine dining where you can treat Bubbie for that special meal, kosher restaurant month showcases what kosher food brings to Toronto's diverse restaurant scene.

Kosher Restaurant Month is the initiative of COR-Kashruth Council of Canada, Canada's largest kosher certification agency. Richard Rabkin, Director of Marketing at COR-Kashruth Council of Canada is excited kosher restaurants are getting the opportunity to showcase their contribution to Toronto's rich culinary tapestry. "Toronto is the most multicultural city in the world, which means we have lots of different types of ethnic cuisines in our city. We are excited for the city of Toronto that May will be the month for kosher restaurants to shine."

The proprietors of Toronto's kosher restaurants are excited for the opportunity as well. Shlomo Esses, owner of four of Toronto's COR Kosher certified restaurants said, "My family and I have been serving quality kosher food in the GTA for over 30 years and we are proud of our long standing partnership with kosher community and COR-Kashruth Council of Canada. I invite Canadians of all backgrounds to my restaurants for Kosher Restaurant Month in May - and throughout the year."

So to all of the residents of the GTA during Kosher Restaurant Month, we wish you b'teavon!

"Kosher" is a Hebrew word that means "fit for consumption" and refers to food that is prepared in accordance with Jewish law. This includes refraining from eating certain non kosher animals (i.e. pigs) as well as other rules such as not mixing milk and meat. In recent years the kosher food industry has expanded dramatically, partly because many consumers see kosher food as healthier or safer. Indeed, a 2009 study by market research firm Mintel found that the number one reason why people purchase kosher products is for food quality (62%).

COR-Kashruth Council of Canada is Canada's largest kosher certifier certifying nearly 1000 companies in Canada and around the world. COR-Kashruth Council of Canada is headquartered in Toronto and certifies 162 Greater Toronto Area food service establishments, 33 of which are participating in Kosher Restaurant Month.
