TORONTO, Oct. 15, 2013 /CNW/ - An important sale of Canadian Fine and Decorative Art belonging to Charles Bronfman's Claridge Collection will be held at Waddington's in Toronto on November 6, 2013. The collection comprises over 900 contemporary works by 372 artists, and includes most of the recipients of the Saidye Bronfman Award, now part of the Governor General's Award. It will be auctioned over three separate sales throughout 2013 and 2014, the proceeds of which will benefit HISTORICA CANADA.
Artists featured in the auction include David Bolduc, David Blackwood, Edward Burtynsky, Alex Cameron, John Massey, Alex Wyse, Alan Wood, Don Proch and Gordon Smith as well as important decorative artists Wayne Ngan, Walter Ostrom, Walter Dexter, Kayo O'Young and a host of others.
Charles Bronfman comments, "Dismantling the collection is bittersweet, but knowing the proceeds will benefit ongoing programs at Historica Canada is really a gift that keeps on giving."
Longtime curator and advisor to the Bronfman family, Franklin Silverstone, was responsible for assembling the collection, and says, "My mandate was to handpick a fun, colourful and bright collection of the top Canadian artists, sculptors and craftspeople, and not based on who was popular at the time. It is gratifying now to see such nation-wide interest in this collection."
Waddington's Vice President of Business Development Stephen Ranger adds, "Waddington's is leading the way with our focus on contemporary art, and the Claridge Collection represents an important breakthrough event as it includes so many important artists working not only in paint and canvas, but ceramics, glass and other media."
A stunning catalogue as well as an extensive index of artists' biographies has been produced for the auction. Previews will be held at Waddington's galleries at 275 King Street East from October 31 through November 5, from 9 am to 5 pm.
The auction will take place on November 6 in two sessions, at 1:00 p.m. for the Decorative Arts and 7:00 p.m. for the Fine Arts.
A special media preview will be held on Wednesday, October 30 at 2:00 p.m.
The catalogues are now available online.
