VANCOUVER, Sept. 19, 2016 /CNW/ - Across the province, British Columbians are celebrating the importance of forests to our daily lives with a wide array of events for both adults and children during National Forest Week, Sept. 18-24.
"Forests provide us with shade from the heat, magnificent vistas, secluded areas for contemplation, and trails for hiking. But forests are also an important part of BC's economy with one in 16 jobs in BC tied to the forest industry," said Bill Bourgeois, RPF and executive director of the National Forest Week BC Coalition.
"BC is a world leader in sustainable forestry, making forestry one of Canada's greenest industries. National Forest Week is a way to highlight not only the social importance of our forests but the economic importance."
National Forest Week events are scheduled for Williams Lake, Revelstoke, Maple Ridge, Prince George, North Vancouver, Coquitlam, Port Alberni, and Clearwater. You can find a full listing of all events at http://canadianforestry.com/wp/calendar/
Additionally, the Association of BC Forest Professionals and the Truck Loggers Association are sponsoring their annual children's art contest which provides an opportunity for children ages 4 to 12 to show us what the forests mean to them. Prizes are available for the winner in each age group (4-5, 6-8, 9-12). Contest details and entry forms are available on the ABCFP website.
Since its creation in the 1920s, National Forest Week provides an opportunity to learn more about the importance of forests and their contribution to our economy, culture, history and future. National Forest Week is coordinated nationally by the Canadian Institute of Forestry and in BC by the National Forest Week BC Coalition, a group of volunteers drawn from across the forest sector. The BC Coalition offers a number of resources including handouts, giveaways, videos and speakers for school class rooms.
