The road less traveled
The co-founders of the Montreal-based FixMeStick, Corey Velan and Marty
Algire, have made a string of decisions that run counter to startup
practices. They bootstrapped their company with their own money versing
seeking venture capital, they built a PC accessory while futurists call
the end of PCs, and they market their product using old school media
like radio versus Twitter and Facebook. "We're not trying to be
contrarian," notes Corey, "We just test a lot and invest in what's
A rocky beginning
9 days into their launch they noticed an error in the manufacturing
process that could cause the FixMeStick to stop working on a small
percentage of PCs. Despite being in their midst of their launch, and
near the end of their cash after a year of research and development,
they decided to ship every customer a free replacement FixMeStick. "It
was emotionally tough," says co-founder Marty Algire. "But Corey and I
enjoy treating customers the way we like to be treated, that made it an
