Canadian Public Relations Society Honours Jean Valin with Philip A. Novikoff Memorial Award

TORONTO, June 5, 2014 /CNW/ - The Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) honoured Jean Valin APR, FCPRS LM, principal, Valin Strategic Communications, with the 2014 Philip A. Novikoff Memorial Award. Valin was recognized for superior and outstanding service over time as a public relations professional. He received a certificate and cash award amongst his peers at the CPRS National Awards Gala on May 27 in Banff, AB.

"Receiving the top award from an industry association is such an honour. Receiving it for a lifetime of achievements usually signals the end of a career. However in my case, I am still working on setting global standards for public relations and receiving the prestigious Philip A. Novikoff award spurs me to continue my quest," said Valin. "I have always believed that by uniting our efforts with other countries we can all advance the professionalization of public relations globally and that works in the public interest."

Established in 1989 in memory of the longtime CPRS member, the late Philip A. Novikoff, the award is given to an accredited CPRS member who has furthered the standing of the public relations profession in Canada. The recipient contributes to the enhancement of CPRS and the betterment of the community.

"Jean has been a leader at multiple levels: local, national and international," said Daniel Tisch APR, FCPRS, CEO of Argyle Communications and one of Valin's nominators. "His leadership has spanned many areas: he has led the development of standards in public relations; he has contributed to our profession's body of knowledge; and he has distinguished himself as an accomplished and ethical practitioner. He is not just a distinguished leader in Canadian public service, but also a leader in his distinguished service to the public relations profession."

Valin has been in the public relations and communications profession for over 30 years. He has extensive federal government communications experience, and now provides strategic counsel in public relations and communications management. Valin has been a member of CPRS since 1981 and has been actively involved with the Society, including serving as National President in 1996-97. Valin has also been involved with the profession at the international level, serving as Chair of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communications Management, a confederation of the world's major PR and communication management associations and institutions, representing 160,000 practitioners and academics around the world. He is currently co-chair of the Commission for Public Relations Education. In 2014 he co-edited "Case studies in public relations from around the world"- seventeen unique or award-winning cases published by Peter Lang.

The Philip A. Novikoff Memorial Award was one of five Major Awards presented this year. The Major Awards recognize exceptional involvement in the public relations profession and candidates are nominated by peers.
