CA Education Foundation releases tips to keep holiday spending on track for young people

EDMONTON, Dec. 6, 2013 /CNW/ - The Chartered Accountants Education Foundation of Alberta (CAEF) and Canadian financial literacy guru, Franco Lombardo, have teamed up to provide Alberta's youth with helpful tips and tricks to avoid overspending during the holiday season.

"As accountants and experts on financial matters, it is our responsibility to get involved and play a role in creating financially literate youth," said Rachel Miller CA, Executive Director of the Foundation. "Today's youth are immersed in a complex world of money management, particularly during the holidays, and providing some financial guidelines will help them navigate through the holiday shopping season without emptying their bank accounts."

The holiday season on its own can be overwhelming and adding shopping to the equation can stir up more financial challenges, especially if you are a student on a budget. When it comes to finding that perfect gift, the CAEF and Franco Lombardo are providing some money-management advice to keep young Albertans' finances in check during the holidays. Tips include:

  • Understanding your "money style" to help you plan your holiday shopping
  • Set a gift budget that is affordable
  • Create your own unique gifts for those special people in your life
  • Focusing on what the holidays are truly about
  • Remember - spending more on gifts for people doesn't mean those people will like you more

"There's no better time than the present for youth to start thinking about their finances," said Franco Lombardo, Managing Director of Veritage, and a leading expert on issues surrounding the psychology of money. "The holiday season can make or break your wallet, but following a few simple money-management tips will help you make smart financial decisions now and in the future."

For further financial tips, a resource the Foundation offers is The Money Project website (, an online web portal for Alberta youth to access a variety of personal money management resources. Working together with some of Canada's leading financial experts, including Franco Lombardo, the Money Project website offers current and compelling content for youth to access.
