Britain's Royal Opera House Brings Opera Cinema Season to Canada
Titles like Parsifal, La bohème and La Traviata to screen in Canada's independent cinemas, performing arts centres, colleges and universities
TORONTO, March 3, 2014 /CNW/ - Canada's independent cinemas, performing arts centres, colleges, and universities are about to be introduced to the unbridled creativity of Britain's beloved Royal Opera House, which brings its world-renowned opera cinema season to Canada this month.
The ROH opera season is presented in partnership with Arts Alliance Media, Mr Wolf, and MEI Events International Inc. — who are collaborating to bring an extensive roster of productions—From Wagner to Verdi—filmed live from the iconic Covent Garden stage of the beautiful Royal Opera House, to Canadian screens.
Now in over 1000 cinemas across 40 countries, the Royal Opera House Cinema Season continues to expand each year. "Our cinema programme gives the audience a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the preparation and tension behind every performance. It really gets the audience closer to the action," says Kasper Holten, Director of The Royal Opera.
Each cinema will cater its schedule to local audiences, and titles will include Wagner's masterpiece Parsifal, restaged for the 21st century and featuring Canadian baritone Gerald Finley. Also hotly anticipated is the Canadian cinematic debut of a brand new production of Manon Lescaut starring the leading tenor of today, Jonas Kaufmann, and the immensely cinematic and critically acclaimed new production of Don Giovanni by Kasper Holten, Director of The Royal Opera.
This launch also marks the beginning of a new network of independent cinemas that will showcase the titles as part of a national effort on the part of MEI Events International Inc to promote alternative programming and transform the national cinema landscape into a series of cultural hubs.
