OTTAWA, Oct. 11, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport), today announced the appointment of Mr. Lloyd McCoomb to the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) as chairperson of the board of directors for a four-year term and the appointment of Mr. Peter Wallis to the board of directors for a three-year term.
"I am very pleased that Mr. McCoomb and Mr. Wallis have accepted these positions," said Minister Fletcher. "The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority will greatly benefit from Mr. McCoomb's business acumen and notable record in management, and Mr. Wallis' in-depth knowledge of the industry and expertise in regulatory affairs."
Mr. McCoomb has over 40 years of experience in transportation and engineering management. Most recently, from February 2007 until March 2012, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority. There he successfully managed the $4.4 billion airport modernization and expansion program of Toronto Pearson International Airport. His previous senior positions have involved airport planning, operations and marketing as well as traffic and transit research, and environmental engineering. Among these, he held executive positions at Transport Canada including that of Director General of Safety and Technical Service from 1989-1990 and 1992-1994. Mr. McCoomb's postgraduate degrees include a doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Toronto. The recipient of several prizes, including a Massey College Fellowship and Queen's Jubilee Medal, Mr. McCoomb served in the armed forces and, since 2006, serves on the Transportation Research Board in addition to numerous other committees and organizations.
Mr. Wallis is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Van Horne Institute, a transportation policy institute based at the University of Calgary. He has held this position since 1997. From 1987-1995, he was Vice President, Government and Regulatory Affairs at Canadian Airlines International Ltd. Prior to joining Canadian Airlines, he held positions of increasing responsibility at Pacific Western Airlines, which he joined in 1980, becoming Vice President in 1986.
Mr. Wallis currently serves on the Board of AEDA (Alberta Economic Development Authority), the Calgary International Film Festival, Tourism Calgary and the Fort McMurray Airport Authority. He has served as Chairman of the Calgary Airport Authority, Vice-chair of the Calgary Homeless Foundation and President of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Wallis also serves as Honorary Consul for Mongolia in Alberta, and was awarded an honorary life membership by the Air Transport Association of Canada (ATAC). He was born in Toronto, Ontario, and holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall and a Master of Laws from the University of London (England).
CATSA, established on April 1, 2002, is a federal Crown corporation. It is responsible for the screening of passengers and their belongings, and screening of non-passengers entering airport restricted areas, as well as any items in their possession. CATSA and Transport Canada work together in aviation security, each with very distinct mandates. CATSA screens 52 million passengers and 62 million pieces of checked baggage each year.
