A Fabulous Premiere for the Biodôme's Penguins!

The Space for Life Is Rolling out the Red Carpet for Nuit Blanche à Montréal

MONTREAL, Feb. 23, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The Space for Life invites media representatives and festival-goers to kick off their Nuit Blanche at the Olympic Park. Because at 5:30 p.m. on February 25, some of the Biodôme's penguins will be heading outdoors to join the party! They won't be shaking hands or exchanging kisses with visitors, but you can watch them arriving on their sled and exploring their new outdoor habitat for the evening. It's a one-of-a-kind event you won't want to miss!

Real-life enrichment
The Biodôme has always offered enrichment activities for its animals. Drawing on the latest scientific discoveries, the institution has been able to develop even more structured and organized programs, with the goal of providing physical and mental stimulation for its different species. Encouraging the animals to adopt the behaviours they display in the wild and appealing to their curiosity helps to improve their overall health - and it's a treat for the public, too!

An icy, snowy habitat created specially for the penguins outside the Biodôme will offer them new sounds and smells, as a way of enriching their lives. If the weather isn't suitable, they will wisely remain indoors, in their refrigerated habitat. They will head back indoors, too, if the weather conditions take a turn for the worse.

An ingenious sleigh
Since it is a rather long way between their indoor and new outdoor habitats for their little webbed feet, human ingenuity came to the rescue. Inspired by Santa's sleigh, the Biodôme's carpenters built a rolling, sliding limousine with a floor that can be lowered, a door and a Plexiglas window, just perfect for six passengers. It will be pulled by one of the aquatic collection attendants who works with the penguins every day.

All kinds of activities
In addition to this premiere, the first event of its kind since it opened in 1992, the Biodôme is offering a nighttime tour of its ecosystems, where some fantastic creatures will be creating a muffled, furtive atmosphere completely different from the daytime one.

A small change: Alexandre Girard will be giving the talk entitled Reconsidérer le réel at 6:30 p.m., instead of Bryan Perro. Girard, a visual artist with over ten years' experience, is a talented digital creator who brings bestsellers to life with his illustrations and sculpts images out of thin air. He will introduce visitors to the fascinating world of imaginary creatures.
